When I was out gathering milkweed for one of the "last" times, I found 2 cats.  One didn't look good, and it did die a couple days later.  The other didn't waste any time pupating along with a lot of the previous ones, so I was finally cat-free, which was a relief as n...

You can't walk by a milkweed plant on the way to the studio and not spot a caterpillar, it seems.  This photo doesn't include the 4 parasitized ones or the one hanging in my office.

This is the first of my Mexico-bound brood.  It should be emerging anytime now.  I'm hop...

September 7, 2016

The prairie plant catalogs have been staring at me for a few weeks now. I dug them out of a pile of other neglected plant books and periodicals after Jerry mentioned that we should get some seeds ordered for our prairie-to-be.

Last week was really something Monarch-wise.  Check this out:

I was out collecting seed from our rapidly fading swamp milkweed and suddenly, everywhere I looked there were Monarch caterpillars. Over the next 4 days, Shannon and I found 19. And this on only 4 mature and...

All 8 were females, which is odd, given that the male to female ratio is 1:1.  They were both lovely.

I don't miss the almost-daily cleaning of their habitats and harvesting  and inspecting of the milkweed, but I sure do miss releasing them. It's a thrill to see them ta...

When I look at my planting projects, I wonder what made me think I could create beautiful gardens – and now, a prairie.

It seems everyone else knows all about plants, their names and how to successfully grow them in arrays of gorgeous shapes and colors. Other people c...
